Upgrade your Howa 1500 or Weatherby Vanguard short-action rifle with the MDT ORYX Sportsman Chassis.

This right-handed chassis combines a rigid 6061 aluminium core with durable polymer exterior panels. Its V-block bedding system supports the action securely, while the free-floating forend prevents unwanted contact with the barrel.

The adjustable cheek riser and length-of-pull system help the shooter achieve a comfortable and repeatable position. The chassis also converts compatible rifles to use detachable polymer short-action AICS-pattern magazines.

This chassis is intended for right-handed, short-action versions of the:

Compatibility is determined by the rifle’s receiver and action length, not only by its calibre or stock design. Confirm that the rifle uses a standard right-handed Howa 1500 or Weatherby Vanguard short action before ordering.

Calibre Information

Typical short-action chamberings can include:

• .243 Winchester
• 6.5 Creedmoor
• 7mm-08 Remington
• .308 Winchester

Other chamberings may fit when they use the correct Howa or Vanguard short-action receiver.

Calibre alone does not confirm compatibility. The selected polymer AICS-pattern magazine must also match the cartridge case and feed geometry.

Important Magazine Requirement

The Howa 1500 and Weatherby Vanguard short-action version of the ORYX chassis is designed for polymer short-action AICS-pattern magazines.

• Magazine is sold separately.
• Original Howa detachable magazines will not fit.
• Original internal-magazine components are not reused.
• Select the magazine according to the cartridge family.
• Metal AICS magazines should not be ordered unless MDT confirms compatibility.
• Magazine capacity depends on the selected model and local regulations.

For .243 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm-08 Remington and .308 Winchester, select the appropriate MDT polymer .308-family AICS magazine.

Not Compatible With

This chassis is not intended for:

• Howa Mini Action rifles
• Howa 1500 long-action rifles
• Weatherby Vanguard long-action rifles
• Left-handed actions
• Howa Mini or Youth models using proprietary magazines
• Original Howa detachable magazines
• Remington, Savage, Tikka or Ruger actions
• Long-action or CIP-length AICS magazines

Do not order based only on calibre. Howa offers rifles with different receiver sizes in certain cartridge families.

Construction and Bedding

The ORYX chassis uses a solid aluminium core to provide a rigid mounting platform for the receiver.

Its V-block bedding system positions the action consistently without requiring traditional glass bedding in most installations. The forend provides clearance around the barrel to maintain a free-floating arrangement.

The polymer exterior panels provide a comfortable gripping surface and help protect the aluminium structure.

Adjustable Buttstock

The integrated buttstock includes:

• Adjustable cheek riser
• Length-of-pull spacer system
• Textured recoil pad
• Straight-line design for supported shooting
• Stable rear surface for use with a shooting bag

The cheek riser can be adjusted to improve eye alignment with a mounted riflescope. Length-of-pull spacers allow the stock to be adapted to the shooter’s size, clothing and shooting position.

Grip Compatibility

An MDT Elite pistol grip is included.

The chassis accepts compatible AR-15 standard and vertical-style pistol grips. Grips with large beavertails or unusual profiles may require fitment confirmation.

Accessory Mounting

M-LOK slots beneath the forend allow compatible accessories to be installed, including:

• Bipod rails and adapters
• Sling mounting points
• Barricade stops
• Tripod adapters
• Utility rails
• Selected ARCA rail systems

The integrated barricade stop provides a firm contact point when shooting from supported positions.

Accessories are sold separately.

Installation

The Howa or Weatherby barreled action is removed from its original stock and installed in the ORYX chassis.

Before installation:

1. Unload the rifle completely.
2. Remove the magazine or internal ammunition.
3. Open the bolt.
4. Confirm visually and physically that the chamber is empty.
5. Follow the MDT installation and torque instructions.

The chassis includes model-specific action screws. Do not reuse screws that are damaged, incorrectly sized or too long.

After installation, confirm that:

• The action is seated correctly
• The action screws are tightened evenly
• The barrel remains free-floating
• The bolt operates without interference
• The safety operates correctly
• The selected magazine locks and feeds correctly

A qualified gunsmith should complete the installation if fitment, feeding or safety cannot be confirmed.
